Fall 2023 Dance Generator’s Assistant
I am very grateful to have been a part of this year’s Dance Generators team as a company assistant. Had I not branched from nursing, I never would have gotten the opportunity to work with such an inspirational group of people. Dance Generators is quite unique. Unlike other dance companies that consist of a singular age group, Dance Generators consists of people of all ages and abilities. Attending rehearsals, workshops, and performances this past semester, I saw the company bridge the gap between our elders and the youth. I was amazed how without even speaking a word, dance, through purposeful and graceful movements, allowed a form of communication between the generations. As part of my role on Dance Generators, I helped manage their social media pages and helped create new content. Because I’m someone who doesn’t post on social media very often, this was initially quite the challenge for me. I wasn’t sure how to make short TikToks or create aesthetic web pages. Slowly but surely, I started learning the ins and outs of social media platforms and got more comfortable with using them. What started as just another assignment for my position turned into something fun and a new hobby. I will continue to make short videos even after I graduate. As I move along with my nursing career, I may not continue to post on social media pages like I have been this past semester, but there are some things I will take with me, such as the ability to communicate non-verbally. Patients communicate in many ways. For example, a patient may not be reporting pain, but their body language might say something different. Seeing how dance allows non-verbal communication across generations reinforces that idea of not needing words to get our point across, and I will continue to look for these non-verbal cues throughout my nursing career.
